Using the reciever with the ZX with my Wireless Controller from my Elite, I press the sync button on the controller, press the sync button on the reciever and it locks to the receiver within a second. Really fast, really simple. What the controller will usually do after syncing is flash fast for a couple of seconds, then it should light up the top left quadrant for Player 1. Then its ready to go. I think my controller 'locks on' however on my controller the light flashes the same as before, and doesn't switch to only 1 quadrent.
